Few places in Morocco are as dramatically beautiful as Ait Benhaddou. This ancient fortified village โ a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987 โ rises like a mirage from the desert floor, its red-ochre towers glowing gold in the late afternoon sun. It has been used as a film location in over 20 major productions and is one of the most photographed places in all of Africa.
Ait Benhaddou in Movies & TV
If Ait Benhaddou looks familiar, it's because you've almost certainly seen it on screen. This ancient kasbah has starred in some of cinema's greatest films:
- Game of Thrones โ Used as the city of Yunkai in Season 3
- Gladiator (2000) โ The opening battle scenes were filmed nearby
- Lawrence of Arabia (1962) โ One of the earliest major productions here
- The Mummy (1999) โ Hamunaptra, City of the Dead
- Babel (2006) โ Multiple scenes throughout
- Prince of Persia (2010) โ Alamut city exterior
- John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023) โ Stunning desert sequences
What to See at Ait Benhaddou
The Ksar (Fortified Village)
The heart of Ait Benhaddou is the Ksar โ a collection of earthen buildings enclosed by high defensive walls. Only a handful of families still live here. Walk through the narrow alleyways, climb to the granary at the top for panoramic views over the Ounila River valley, and explore the ancient towers that have stood for over 1,000 years.
Cross the River
To enter the Ksar you cross the Ounila River โ by stepping stones in summer, or by small boat after rain. This crossing is part of the experience and gives you the classic view of the village rising above the water.
Sunrise & Sunset Views
Ait Benhaddou is extraordinary at golden hour. The red-ochre clay walls glow intensely in the late afternoon sun. If you're staying overnight in Ouarzazate, come back at sunrise โ you'll have the village almost entirely to yourself.
"Arrive before 10am or after 4pm to avoid the tour bus crowds. Midday is very busy and the light is harsh for photos. The village is most magical in late afternoon when the clay walls turn deep gold."
